“…in the tradition of Chaplin, Keaton, and Tati; funny and sad and more than the sum of both.” – Washington Post
The Mitch Show is a fast-paced evening of comic films and audience-participation pieces by Mitchell Rose. A former choreographer and performance artist, now prize-winning filmmaker, Mitch’s offbeat films have won 54 festival awards and are screened across the globe, from the Getty Museum to the CBS Jumbo Vision in Times Square to a State Dept. tour of Kosovo. Manically funny, often poignant and always surprising, The Mitch Show appeals equally to fans of film, theater, dance, and comedy.

| The Center for the Arts Presents Ladysmith Black Mambazo
Posted on: 2012-02-05
“It isn’t merely the grace and power of their dancing or the beauty of their singing that rivets the attention, but the sheer joy and love that emanates from their being.” – Paul Simon
“Undulating rhythmic phrases that push and pull … harmonising that is both ethereal and earthy.” – World Music, UK
“For an a cappella group that began in 1973 and won three Grammys, Ladysmith’s voice is still resilient and timeless.” – PopEater
“Above all LBM leave their audience in awe of the power and variety of the human voice and its ability to conjure up sounds which evoke the beauty and atmosphere of a land far away. What a gift.” – Yorkshire Post
The Center for the Arts is pleased to present Grammy Award winners Ladysmith Black Mambazo on Monday, February 27 at the Veteran’s Memorial Auditorium. Ladysmith, best known for their breakthrough performance on Paul Simon’s Grammy winning 1986 Album of the year Graceland, has continued to bring their rich harmonies to audiences worldwide. In 1987, Simon produced Black Mambazo’s first U.S. release, Shaka Zulu, which won the Grammy Award, in 1988 for Best Traditional Folk Album. Since then, and in total, the group has received fifteen Grammy Award Nominations and three Grammy Award wins, including one in 2009.
Ladysmith Black Mambazo – led by founder and front man Joseph Shabalala – celebrates forty-five years of joyous and uplifting music that marries the intricate rhythms and harmonies of their native South African musical traditions to the sounds and sentiments of Christian gospel music. In those years, the a cappella vocal group has created a musical and spiritual alchemy that has touched a worldwide audience representing every corner of the religious, cultural and ethnic landscape. Their musical efforts over the past four decades have garnered praise and accolades within the recording industry, but also solidified their identity as a cultural force to be reckoned with.
In addition to their work with Paul Simon, Ladysmith Black Mambazo has recorded with numerous artists from around the world, including Stevie Wonder, Josh Groban, Dolly Parton, Ben Harper, Sarah McLachlan, Natalie Merchant, Melissa Etheridge, Emmylou Harris, Taj Mahal and others. Their performance with Paul Simon on Sesame Street is legendary and is one of the top three requested Sesame Street segments in history. They have appeared on Broadway in their show “The Song of Jacob Zulu” which received six Tony Award Nominations as well as a Drama Desk Award for Best Music. They followed this performance with “Nomathemba” a theatrical musical based on the first song written by Joseph Shabalala. They have shared the stage with Paul McCartney, Rod Stewart, Eric Clapton, Joe Cocker and Phil Collins.
Just when one thinks the group should be slowing down they are entering what will be the busiest years of their career since Graceland. They have six new recording projects they are readying for release, over the next few years, a new concert DVD and a Children’s recording project. No, time is not slowing down for Ladysmith Black Mambazo. As Joseph Shabalala says, “We are teachers. We travel the world spreading our message of Peace, Love and Harmony. What could be better or more important than that.”

Beginning next week, in my Blend and Gentle Blend classes, we will be embarking on a Journey Through The Chakras. We will learn what a chakra is and how each one affects us, physically and emotionally. We will begin with the first chakra, working our way up each week until we've covered them all. | The Center for the Arts Presents An Evening of Classic Lily Tomlin
Posted on: 2012-01-10
“She has been on the cover of Time, People, American Film, and The Advocate. She’s been on the silver screen, the little screen, in comedy clubs, and onstage for over four decades. Lily Tomlin is a staple of American comedy.” – Sarasota Herald Tribune
Tony and Emmy Award-winning comedienne-actress, writer and producer Lily Tomlin brings her live stage show to Veterans Memorial Auditorium on Sunday, March 25.
The multi-talented entertainer is probably best known for the unforgettable characters she has created over the years, including Ernestine the telephone operator, 5-year-old Edith Ann, and Tommy Velour. Tomlin, who has also won a Grammy Award and has been nominated for an Academy Award, began doing stand-up in the 1960s and made her television debut on “The Merv Griffin Show” in 1965. She became one of the stars of NBC’s sketch comedy show “Laugh-In,” where she became best known for her characters, who also included the upper class Tasteful Lady and Susie the Sorority Girl.
As an actress, Tomlin was nominated for an Academy Award for her role in Robert Altman’s “Nashville.” She also appeared in the film comedy “Nine to Five,” and performed several comedic roles in the 1981 film “The Incredible Shrinking Woman,” and was a sickly heiress in the Steve Martin comedy “All of Me.” Other films include the 1989 comedy “Big Business,” “Short Cuts,” “Flirting With Disaster” and “I Heart Huckabees.” In 2008, she collaborated again with director Robert Altman, starring in Altman’s last film “A Prairie Home Companion,” playing Rhonda Johnson, one half of a middle-aged Midwestern singing duo with Meryl Streep.
On television, Tomlin voiced Ms. Frizzle on the animated series “The Magic School Bus” from 1994 to 1997, appeared on the popular sitcom “Murphy Brown” as the title character’s boss, and had a recurring role as Will Truman’s boss Margot on “Will & Grace.” She appeared on the dramatic series “The West Wing” for four years (2002–2006) in the recurring role of presidential secretary Deborah Fiderer.
Tomlin was the first woman to appear solo in a Broadway show with her premiere of “Appearing Nitely” at the Biltmore theatre in April 1977. The same month, she made the cover of Time magazine with the headline “America’s New Queen of Comedy.” Her solo show then toured the country and was made into a record album titled “On Stage.” In 1985, Tomlin starred in another one-woman Broadway show “The Search For Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe,” written by her long-time life partner, writer/producer Jane Wagner. The show won her a Tony Award, and was made into a feature film in 1991. Tomlin revived the show for a run on Broadway in 2000, which then toured the country through mid-2002.
Tomlin premiered her one-woman show “Not Playing with a Full Deck” at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas in November 2009. She guest-starred as Marilyn Tobin in the third season of “Damages” on FX in 2010.
Tomlin has received numerous awards, including: four primetime Emmys, two Tonys, two Drama Desk Awards, an Outer Critics Circle Award a CableACE Award, and a Grammy Award.

| Alta Sierra Residents Need to Use Caution
Posted on: 2011-08-03
We were just advised by one of our readers that she and two of her neighbors had items stolen from their garages after they were left open or unlocked. We are all so lucky to live in an area that is generally safe and relatively crime free and it is easy to think that our property will always be safe. This is a good reminder that we all need to be a little more cautious and develop good habits like keeping our homes, cars and garages safely locked up.
