Taiko Drumming Anyone?
Posted on: 2010-02-09
So you feel you are getting older, but you still have some spunk… You know you need some exercise to fight the winter blues, and bulges, but the gym routine is not for you… Well, here is a new way to get some exercise, have fun and express your creativity: Learn to play Taiko drums with Taiko-Con-Fusion!
This fairly new group is celebrating its 1st year anniversary by offering a free beginners’ class every Monday or Friday evening in February, at the Yellow building behind the Tree of Life Medical Center (next to The Willo on Hwy 49), just outside Nevada City.
Taiko-Con-Fusion is geared more toward mature players, although young adult players are welcomed. For those unfamiliar with taiko, this drumming has its origins in Japan. It is performed by a group of drummers, each usually playing one drum. Typically, the drums are big—about half the size of a wine barrel. Larger and smaller drums are incorporated as well, and all together they create a thunderous variety of sounds. The music consists of patterns that range from very simple to complex. They are all memorized and played with sticks called bachi, hitting the drum in various ways. It has been said that listening to taiko drums is a visceral experience because the sound permeates the listener’s being. Playing taiko however, takes the experience even further as it transports the player to a joyous state that few words can describe. Here is what veterinarian Susan Murphy, co-founder of this group wrote about drumming:
Why do we Drum?
We drum for joy, we drum for health, we drum to experience unity with the drum, our fellow players and to feel the resounding vibrations honoring our Mother Earth. We drum for different reasons, we drum for creativity, we drum for the heck of it, we drum to find our natural rhythm…
For more information call Katherine at 913-7826 or simply show up any Friday or Monday in February from 5:00 to 6:00 pm, behind the Tree of Life Medical Center, in Nevada City. Monthly dues are $25 (or sliding scale), but remember, all of February is free to newcomers. All are welcome and any physical limitations will be accommodated. Dress comfortably and go have some fun!
